If the SUNY/ Cobleskill students were successful in their effort to extract the ancient yeast then Bill Felter at Serious Brewing planned to craft a new brew using it.

But when the Shipwreck beer story went viral Serious Brewing receive a call from the another craft brewery in Long Island informing Felter that they were already brewing beer using yeast taken from bottles found in the wreck of the SS Oregon.

Turns out, Jamie Adams the owner/brewer at the Saint James Brewery in Long Island, has for the past year or so been making use of yeast taken from bottles found in the wreck which sank off Fire Island in 1886… And he’d finally successfully crafted a beer using the yeast which he’d hoped to debut at the New York State Brewers Fest on March 9 in Albany.

On Monday afternoon, Felter took a call from Adams. The conversation was friendly, according to NY Upstate. And it ended with Serious Brewing announcing that it no longer planned to make a beer using the shipwreck yeast.

Words To Drink By (Howes Cave, NY) – “I am personally not going to brew any beer with that yeast, out of respect for him (Adams) being a fellow New York farm brewer.” Bill Felter / Serious Brewing
