The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s some more of what’s been happening in the beer world while you were drinking your way through the weekend.

Carlsberg Commits To “Craft” in China (Tianchang, Anhui Province) Danish brewer Carlsberg has officially launched its first local brewery outside of Europe dedicated to premium and craft beer production according to Shine.

Carlsberg Beer Anhui Co Ltd, a wholly owned unit of the Danish brewer, has invested over 100 million yuan (US$14.34 million) in the new brewing facility that hopes to cash in on China’s emerging craft beer market… a sector which has been growing almost 40 percent annually.

Carlsberg’s new 100 million yuan (US$14.34 million) facility is a state-of-the-art operation capable of producing 100,000 hectoliters of beer annually. And it will serve as an Asian Pacific hub for Carlsberg’s craft division which now includes the Brooklyn Brewery line., Quick Hits: Carlsberg Opens Craft Brewery In China, Beer Urban Myth Exposed And More

Carlsberg’s new brewery, which is located northwest of Shanghai is only the Danish brewer’s latest foray into China’s craft beer biz. Last March Carlsberg acquired a minority stake in Jing–A Brewing, a Beijing-based craft brewery that’s been building an empire on the Chinese mainland.

Jing-A, which was founded in 2012 by Alex Acker and Kris Li, two North American expatriates who had been living in Beijing since 2000, is known for its use of Chinese ingredients such as red rice koji, ginger, and Sichuan peppercorn, as well as for its interpretations of more American beer styles such as IPAs (of course), Witbiers and Stouts.

Another Beer Urban Myth Bites The Dust (Denmark) The long-held concept that tapping a shaken beer will keep it from exploding upon opening has been shot down by researchers at the University of Southern Denmark who “meticulously experimented with shaken and unshaken beer cans before coming to their conclusion.”, Quick Hits: Carlsberg Opens Craft Brewery In China, Beer Urban Myth Exposed And More

The theory behind the beer tapping is this according to Fox. “When a beer can is shaken, it causes bubbles to form in the liquid. When the can is opened, the bubbles rush to the top and cause the liquid to fizz out of the can. Tapping the can is supposed to cause the bubbles to release from the side of the can and rise to the top prior to the can being opened.”

The beer tapping study was hardly rocket science…The Dutch researchers had two sets of cans–one vigorously shaken and one that wasn’t. The cans were weighed before being opened and afterward. Some of the cans were tapped and some weren’t. Regardless, the tapping showed no impact on the amount of liquid lost when the can was opened. So there’s that…
