And not only is it super-pricey, it was brewed on the highest mountain in the British Isles…Talk about a peak experience!

Here’s the deal…

Named after the summit of the UK’s highest peak where it was made, Northern Monk believes its new beer, Ben Nevis, the highest altitude brew in British history. And unless another brewery we don’t know about made the climb and crafted a beer on snowy summit, we expect that’s probably true.

Brewed with foraged ingredients that were gathered on the climb, including blaeberries (also known as bilberries) and ‘Dew of Ben Nevis’ water, Northern Monk’s Ben Nevis is an  11% ABV Imperial Stout that spent 2 months aging in a whisky barrel donated by the Ben Nevis Whisky Distillery in Scotland.

There are only 50 bottles of the summit-brewed Stout available, which helps explain the beer’s hefty £1,000 price tag (approximately $1287 US) but it is for a good cause…

As the Drinks Business explains “All proceeds taken from the sale of the Ben Nevis beer will be donated to the For the North Foundation, a grant scheme created by Northern Monk back in September which dedicates all funding to projects that are ‘designed to benefit the North, its people and its communities”

Created to will raise awareness and encourage donations to the brewery’s effort, Northern Monk’s founder, Russell Bisset, emphasized that “Brewing the UK’s highest altitude beer at the summit of Ben Nevis seemed like a pretty good place to start!”

“Since we launched the Foundation mid-September, we’ve received grant applications from so many thoroughly deserving causes, and we’d like to thank everybody that’s donated funds so far for their generosity and support.”

The first bottles of UK’s most expensive stout were auctioned off at an event at the Northern Monk Refectory in Manchester on November 7r, during a screening of a short documentary of the climb, and generated more than  £7000 towards the effort…
