For over 100 years, the Märzen style (a full-bodied malt-rich lager) ruled Oktoberfest. But by the 1990s, the darker, maltier Märzen had largely given way at Munich’s festival to the lighter, golden Festbier that dominates Oktoberfest today.

Tröegs Oktoberfest Lager 

Pennsylvania has a rich German heritage, so it shouldn’t surprise that Hershey, PA’s Tröegs Independent Brewing makes one of the best Oktoberfest beers in the nation. Part of the brewery’s popular Long Live Lagers Series and crafted using a traditional brewing technique called decoction,  is a 6.1% ABV seasonal release with bright notes of sweet caramel, fresh-baked bread, and flowering herbs.

“It’s one of our simplest recipes and only uses two types of malt,” said brewmaster and co-founding brother, John Trogner. “It starts with a base of pilsner malt, then we add a touch of Munich to impart a bready flavor. By boiling a portion of the mash, we create a bright, dry maltiness. The yield is a rich, complex malt character.”

Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest Festbier

Sierra Nevada has made its annual Oktoberfest release something of a passport program in recent years, partnering with German breweries to put a fresh spin on one of fall’s most traditional beer styles.

The 2026 Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest is a 6% ABV Festbier brewed in collaboration with Hoppebräu, an innovative, modern Bavarian brewery from Waakirchen, Germany.

Lightly dry-hopped for a hint of floral character and balanced by biscuity flavor thanks to Munich malt, this year’s vintage delivers a crisp, forward-thinking golden lager that bridges classic German heritage with an American craft brewing touch.
