At a time when craft beer is largely being sold in 4 and 6-packs, Wisconsin’s most lauded brewery has made a rare leap to cases.

Here’s the deal…

New Glarus BrewingGlarus, New Glarus Debuts Craft Beer By The Case is one of the nation’s most acclaimed breweries. They’re fiercely Wisconsin in almost every respect and you can only buy their products in the “The Badger State.”

But none of New Glarus beers are more iconic than their best-selling Spotted Cow, a 4.8% ABV Wisconsin Farmhouse Ale, brewed with flaked barley and special Wisconsin malts, that is now available in cases of cans….a rarity in the craft beer biz.

Speaking with the Green Bay Press Gazette, New Glarus Brewing’s Founder and President Deb Carey, explained that Spotted Cow would “likely will be the only beer from the brewery’s extensive lineup available by the case in the near future.”

Inspired by the kind of pre-prohibition ales that Wisconsin farmers or a small brewery might have made in the 1800s, Spotted Cow was never a sure thing.

First introduced in 1997, Spotted Cow had an unusual name that might be more commonly associated with milk rather than beer, featured a more old-world recipe and a cloudy ambiance that left wholesalers concerned.

Glarus, New Glarus Debuts Craft Beer By The CaseAs the Journal reported, “some even refused to sell the beer because they thought it was absurd to write a name like Spotted Cow next to Budweiser on an invoice. But the naysayers relented after they saw how much people liked it. Now about half of New Glarus’s production is dedicated to Spotted Cow.”

In the world of craft beer where quality, not cost or quantity is what’s valued, New Glarus selling its most prized brew by the case is a decidedly bold move for 16th largest craft brewery in the nation…a brewery that didn’t even begin canning until 2016.

And in keeping with New Glarus’ Wisconsin-centric positioning, Spotted Cow’s new 4-pack features beer, cans, and packaging made entirely in-state.
