San Diego is furthering its claim as the “Capital of Craft” with a new beer museum that a group of beer entrepreneurs hope to build.

Here’s the deal….

Make no mistake, the Museum of Beer is still in its early stages…There’s an Indiegogo page and a passionate team of beer lovers behind it that are serious about an idea that was inspired by a niche museum dedicated to of, all things, ice cream.

“We visited the Museum of Ice Cream in Los Angeles, walked out, and said ‘why isn’t anyone doing this with beer?’ The adventure began at that moment and the concept has since evolved from a temporary pop up about beer to a full-blown experiential museum dedicated to the history and industry of San Diego craft beer,” beer entrepreneur Mike Kociela explained to Pacific.

Slated to open downtown sometime in 2020, San Diego’s Museum will celebrate brewing and city’s craft beer legacy with cutting-edge exhibits that are educational, entertaining and fully interactive.

And these are just some of the planned exhibits…

The Science of Beer – The first stop on the museum experience, this exhibit will feature a nano brew system where guests can take a crash course on the science and process of brewing. They will learn how hops, yeast, grains, and water are combined to create the wide range of flavor profiles that exist today and will also get an overview of fermentation, sanitation, and recipe development.

Beer Universe – This is where visitors will discover how the world of beer is organized. Not only will they learn about lagers and ales—they’ll be immersed in the world of beer styles along with the basics of color, aroma, and flavor that go with each style.

America’s Hoppiest City – Visitors can take an interactive journey through San Diego’s craft beer history and meet the groups that helped the city become one of the most important craft beer destinations in the world.

The Art of Craft – As important as the craft beer is itself, the same should be said about the artwork found on the label. This exhibit will celebrate the mashup of brewing and art in a gallery style setting, and highlight the most iconic logos, cans, and labels found across the San Diego craft beer spectrum.

The Museum of Beer will also feature a 65-tap tasting room, serving only San Diego-brewed beer, as well as a pizza kitchen, bottle shop, merchandise booth, private event space, and outdoor beer garden with a live music stage.

A permanent brewmaster will also be joining the group in order to “educate guests about the brewing process, help home-brewers get to the next level and brew beer for the museum’s tasting room,” according to Kociela.

And in addition to being the centerpiece of the Museum of Beer, the on-site nano brewery will also act as an outlet for smaller San Diego breweries to use when developing new beers. Plus a  portion of the museum’s ticket sales will be recycled back to the community, supporting organizations such as the San Diego Brewers Guild, as well as  the museum’s own brewers scholarship program.
