New Beer Alert: Low-Alcohol India Pale Ales And Artisan Hefeweizens

A 6-pack box, a can, and a glass of Lakefront Brewery's "Noon Game" IPA sit on an outdoor wooden table, with the Milwaukee skyline and the Lakefront Brewery building visible across the river in the background.

Yikes, July is just flying by and American craft brewers are marking the season with a smart roster of warm weather beers.

Game ON! (Milwaukee, WI) – Founded in 1987, Lakefront Brewery, a  craft beer legend  located along the Milwaukee River in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has a new addition to its year-round roster that is brewed for beer lovers who want full IPA flavor without the high alcohol content.

Crafted with carefully curated Cashmere, Citra, and El Dorado hop menu and only 100 calories,  Lakefront Noon Game is a 3.2% ABV India Pale Ale with bright citrus, pineapple, and mango aromatics that give way to a smooth malt profile.

“People still want all the flavor of a great IPA, but they’re also looking for beers that fit more occasions,” says Lakefront President Russ Klisch. “Noon Game lets you enjoy the sunshine, catch the game with friends, and still have the evening ahead of you.”

A Good, Cheap, Fun, Blind Beer Tasting (Bend, OR) – 10 Barrel Brewing recently invited the ACB crew to blind test two light lagers and choose a favorite. One was a mass-market light lager, the other, the brewery’s newest light beer, that came to us in wrapped cans as Beer X and Beer Y. So we assembled 10 participants to get their feedback. Again, nobody knew which was the craft light lager and which one was the popular mass-market brew.

So what happened? 10 Barrel’s 99 calorie, 45 ABV Pub Light Lager happened, winning 9 to 1 in the matchup. This is a no‑nonsense lager brewed with 100% malt, without any sugar, corn, rice, or fillers. So if you’re in the mood for something lighter, more affordable, that doesn’t just taste like water, this is a beer you’ll want to chase down.

Lighten Up (Portland, OR) – Widmer Brothers Brewing is a foundational American craft brewery founded in 1984 in Portland, Oregon, by brothers Kurt and Rob Widmer. As a true pioneer of the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement, the company is best known for creating the original American-style Hefeweizen. And that beer has just been brilliantly reimagined.

Released as part of their “Stay Sunny” brand refresh, Widmer Hefe Light is a 4% ABV American Hefeweizen with Yuzu, which adds a tart, exotic, citrus punch and grapefruit which brings a bright, slightly sweet flavor profile that cuts through the wheat base.
