New Beer Alert: 3 Bold Takes On The India Pale Ale

The IPA remains the craft beer industry’s most popular style, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon.
So for t0day’s New Beer Alert, we’ve rounded up three very different takes on the India Pale Ale. All big on flavor, but each gets there its own way.
Double Trouble (Hershey, PA) – With more craft beer fans than ever gravitating towards bigger and bolder versions of their favorite beers, Tröegs Independent Brewing has retuned an amped up take of their popular year-round Perpetual IPA that was a huge hit when they rolled it out last year.
Part of the brewery’s rotating Once-a-Year Series, which also includes favorites like Mad Elf, Nugget Nectar, and Nimble Giant, Tröegs Double Perpetual IPA is a MASSIVE 9.5% ABV West Coast-Style India Pale Ale crafted with unapologetic amounts of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops.
Like many of Tröegs’ beers, Double Perpetual came up through the brewery’s small-batch Scratch Series, where they experiment with ingredients and techniques until they hit on something special.
“One of the ways we share our creative process is through our Scratch Series,” said brewmaster John Trogner. “Over the years, it’s served as a testing ground for potential new beers, and one of the first ones to come out of the Scratch Series was Perpetual IPA.”

Brewed Loud (San Diego, CA) – Most “band beers” are predictable marketing exercises, slap the band’s name on the label and run. But Stone Brewing’s uber-small batch collaboration that they did with Pierce the Veil’s frontman Vic Fuentes isn’t any of that.
Inspired by the brewery and Fuentes’ love of the West Coast IPA, Stone Pierce The Veil IPA is a 6.5% ABV India Pale Ale brewed with Centennial, Citra, El Dorado and Krush hops. It’s light-bodied and dry, with bright orange peel, ripe citrus and tropical fruit notes that give way to a crisp bitterness and resinous finish.
Krush, a relatively new hop variety, gives the beer a more contemporary fruit-forward edge, while Centennial, Citra and El Dorado keep one foot planted firmly in Stone’s old-school West Coast IPA roots.
“Beer has always been something I’ve loved, especially a great West Coast IPA,” Fuentes said. “Getting to brew one with Stone, my favorite hometown brewery, made this incredibly personal.”
Rock music has long been a part of craft beer’s DNA, but the best collaborations are built on deeper connections. Stone Brewing and Pierce The Veil share a hometown, a fiercely loyal fan base and a history of doing things louder than necessary.
And now they share a West Coast IPA too.

A Touch Of The Tropics (Hood River, OR) – Earlier this year pFriem Family Brewers introduced a nes year-round offering that remains right on time. Crafted using cutting-edge brewing practices, including concentrated Krush Cryo hops, to achieve intense flavor and aroma while maintaining shelf stability, pFriem Tropical Hazy IPA is a vibrant 6.3% ABV India Pale Ale lush in pineapple, mango, and passion fruit notes, a soft, full-flavored mouthfeel and restrained bitterness.
Visually, the beer pours a vibrant golden hue with gentle haze and a persistent white foam. On the palate, tropical fruit character leads, supported by structure and drinkability designed for repeat pours rather than one-off novelty.
“We’ve noticed that the Hazy IPA drinker enjoys light-hearted and dynamic tropical flavors, which we are really leaning into with our new Tropical Hazy IPA core beer,” says Josh Pfriem, Brewmaster and Co-founder of pFriem Family Brewers. “We are excited for this beer to be a go-to for fun, easy-going, and youthful occasions where drinkers are looking for a flavorful, quality, and well-balanced beer.”
