Neo-Nazi German Reich Beer Sells Out

Alarms were raised after a retailer in a small German town put a Neo-Nazi beer on sale. And even more disturbing, that beer went on to sell out.

Here’s the deal…

Police were called to a shop in Germany last week that was selling a beer named “German Reich Brew” made by a known neo-Nazi.

German authorities launched an investigation after a beer labeled with Nazi-era German Reich symbols was sold at a drinks retailer in the small town of Bad Bibra, in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.

That beer is produced by Tommy Frenck, an extremist former politician turned beer producer who was the candidate for the far-right National Democratic Party in Thuringia’s state election in 2014.

Frenck, who launched the “Deutsches Reichsbräu” (“German Reich Brew”) brand earlier this year, has been selling it primarily on his online shop along with a variety of other right-wing extremist merchandise that are as misguided as his beer.

The beer was spotted according to DW.com, by local conservative politician Götz Ulrich, who posted pictures of a retail display on his Facebook page along with a post that began, “I am so ashamed.”

“But the worst thing is: The beer did good business and is sold out!” Ulrich added. “It is a devastating sign that so many people aren’t ashamed of touching this and don’t mind throwing their money at a neo-Nazi,” he told the DPA news agency.

And ironically one of those “throwing their money at a neo-Nazi,” was Urich who according to the Tagesspiegel newspaper bought one of the last bottles to bring to a commemorative event at a concentration camp, as a sign of the continuing far-right threat.

The beverage store selling the beer was part the Getränke-Quelle retail chain. And on Friday that franchise released a statement distancing itself from the Bad Bibra shop (Yah Think?) and discontinuing its partnership with the store.

This from the retail chain’s statement…

“The Getränke-Quelle in Bad Bibra is not run by our employees…The local franchisee is independent and he is permitted to sell products without consulting us. Until today we knew nothing about the sale of the beer ‘Deutsches Reichsbräu.’ We immediately got in contact with the manager and demanded the removal of the article from the store … We will have our branding removed this coming Monday.”

After investigating the incident Thuringia authorities stated that the “Deutsches Reichsbräu” beer can’t be banned as its imagery is not on the list of “prohibited symbols” in Germany.

“The imperial eagle nor the iron cross are forbidden symbols,” the police said, in response to complaints on social media. “It would be different in connection with the swastika.”
