“Winter is Coming” is the motto of House Stark, the lords of the North from the popular Game of thrones saga. And now Mikkeller is releasing three Game of Thrones beers that captures its meaning as well as the season.
Here’s the deal…
Danish craft beer company, Mikkeller, and Warner Bros. Consumer Products have teamed up to extend the reach of the Game of Thrones franchise with multi-year partnership that fans all over the world can enjoy, one stein at a time.
And if you don’t know about Game of Thrones, or Mikkeller for that matter, we don’t know what to say…
Game of Thrones has aired in over 207 countries and territories and amassed millions of fans, and over its eight seasons the show has taken the throne as ‘the world’s largest TV series’. It’s been ten years since the world became acquainted with the series’ intoxicating universe with more GoT spin-offs planned to air in the future.
And Mikkeller, which was founded in 2006 by Mikkel Bjergsø, is a world-renowned Copenhagen based craft brewery that has just released three new Game of Thrones inspired beers that signal that winter is definitely coming.
“As the beers are launched right up to winter, and winter plays a significant role in Game of Thrones,” said says Mikkel Bjergsø, founder and creative director of Mikkeller, “ it made sense to find inspiration for the beers in Westeros’ frozen, dark world.”
Based on the winter theme, Mikkeller’s team developed three very different beers that through recipes and designs, support the series’ imaginative stories: a fruity New England double IPA, a clean, light and fresh lager and a full-bodied barrel-aged imperial stout.
And this is how Mikkeller explains them…
Night King Double IPA
(Double New England-style IPA, 8% ABV) Inspired by the army commander of the White Walkers, a fearsome creature created thousands of years ago whose mission is to take on Westeros. In the series, the legends tell of the return of the White Walkers and The Long Night, many thousands of years ago, where everything froze to ice.
Ghost Visions Lager
(Lager, 4.5% ABV) Inspired by one of a total of six direwolves, which are found by the Stark family in the first episode of the series and subsequently adopted and raised by Jon Snow. Ghost is an albino wolf and Snow’s faithful companion.
Castle Black Stout
(Bourbon Barrel -Aged imperial Oatmeal stout, 11.3% ABV) Inspired by the bastion of The Night’s Watch; the torn army that is to protect the Seven Kingdoms from all threats from the cold North and the mythical White Walkers led by the Night King. Castle Black is the center of a total of three manned castles left along the massive ice wall that separates Westeros from the Land of Always Winter.
According to Bjergsø there will be many Game of Thrones releases in the future. Some of those releases will be wide launches while others highly limited productions using exclusive ingredients and processes.
In addition to the beers, fans will also be able to purchase a range of merchandise from Mikkeller inspired by the series.
