Beer Tech: Heineken’s New AI Tap Creates 135 Different Beers

Artificial intelligence can already write your emails, generate pictures and tell you what movie you should stream tonight. Now Heineken thinks it can figure out what kind of beer you should be drinking and we’re good with that.

The Dutch brewing giant has unveiled Personalized Draught, an experimental AI-powered beer tap capable of dispensing 135 different beer variations from a single tap.

Developed by Heineken Studio and introduced in Amsterdam on September 15, the system combines artificial intelligence with some decidedly more traditional beer technology to create a drink tailored to the person ordering it.

And no, there aren’t 135 different kegs hiding under the bar.

Instead, Personalized Draught uses liquids stored in integrated barrels that can be blended in different combinations, allowing the system to adjust characteristics including flavor, intensity and alcohol content. The resulting beers can range from 0.0% to 5% ABV.

The exact number of base liquids Heineken is using hasn’t been disclosed, but the company says the system can produce 135 possible Heineken beer expressions.

That’s where the AI comes in.

Rather than simply asking whether you prefer something light, bitter or malty, drinkers scan a QR code and answer questions designed to give the system a sense of who they are and what’s happening around them.

Those inputs can include personality traits and favorite movies, as well as things like the weather and even the social energy of the group you’re drinking with. The AI then matches that information with one of the system’s possible beer profiles.

Once the beer has been blended and poured, the machine can even print a personalized label detailing what it came up with.

It’s an interesting meld of brewing, technology and personalization, although calling it an AI brewer may be a step too far.

This AI system isn’t inventing recipes. It’s essentially acting as a digital matchmaker, choosing among beer combinations that have already been developed and calibrated by Heineken’s brewing and research teams.

Heineken Global Master Brewer Willem van Waesberghe was involved in developing those combinations, which the company says are intended to maintain brewing standards even as the resulting beer changes from one customer to another.

And Heineken isn’t positioning Personalized Draught as a replacement for traditional brewing techniques either.

At least not yet.

For now, Personalized Draught is a beta experiment from Heineken Studio, the company’s Amsterdam-based innovation space, and part of a broader attempt to rethink how consumers discover beer.

Whether drinkers actually want an algorithm that takes into account their favorite movie, personality and the weather is another question entirely.

But 135 beers from one tap?

We’re most definitely in!
