One of our favorite craft brewers in London, Logan Plant’s Beavertown Brewery is joining a UK effort by giving away one of its most popular beers to those willing to make a blood donation.

At the start of the year, the UK’s NHS Blood & Transplant Service issued an urgent appeal for more donors, in particular those that are male.

According to the NHS in 2018 more than twice as many females gave blood in England than males and the service was looking to attract more male donors to the effort.

This is particularly important because male blood can offer unique attributes that are valued for products like platelets and allogeneic serum due to the fact their blood contains fewer antibodies against red and white blood cells.

Women only generate these antibodies during pregnancy and their their blood often contains less iron than men.

Last year an almost 830,000 people gave blood in the UK, the overriding majority of those donors being women.

It’s true! Giving blood will get you a “bloody good” IPA and Beavertown is betting that its offer will attract more male donors to the campaign.

And Beavertown brand manager, Sam Millard is bloody serious abbot the effort…

“Giving blood is something all of us would like to get behind, from our staff, friends and family and our customers whose lives have been saved by blood donations.

“The NHS says we need 400 new donors every single day to keep up with demand – so by celebrating Bloody Ell with this ‘bloody’ twist, we want to smash that 400 target.

“We’re giving craft beer fans who haven’t got around to giving blood another great reason to sign up and book in their appointments.”

Last month, Beavertown tweaked the recipe of its popular blood orange IPA, according to the Drinks Business reducing its alcohol content to a more sessional 5.5% ABV and working with suppliers to ensure the orange pulp used in the beer can be stored and preserved to be used all year round.

“From now and forever more Bloody ‘Ell will be all about more juice, less loose, the brewery announced on its blog, “and that is something we think everyone can get behind.”
