Covid-19 has changed America’s craft beer landscape profoundly. But in spite of its impact, every closure announcement we receive seems to be countered by a new brewery opening…

Scofflaw Brewing To Open Second Brewery on Halloween

One of Atlanta’s most impressive and popular craft brewery, Sofflaw Brewing, will be opening a new research and development brewery and taproom in the city’s Westside neighborhood on Halloween.

Located just a little more than a mile from Scofflaw’s first brewery, Dr. Scofflaw’s Laboratory and Beer Garden will include a taproom with communal tables, a designer bar and an outdoor patio space, complete with outdoor games.

The new 9,000 square-foot space is located in The Works, a completely overhauled series of warehouses in Atlanta being built in phases to eventually feature 500 residences, a 200-key boutique hotel, 13 acres of greenspace, and retail shops.

Founded in 2016 by Matt Shirah and Travis Herman, who describe themselves as “trailer trash brewers” according to Eater Atlanta, Scofflaw has enjoyed a reputation for crafting serious beer and their sometimes irreverent behavior.

Scofflaw Brewing got into hot water in England two years ago, after a PR stunt embracing President Trump destroyed a promotional visit the brewery had forged with Scotland-headquartered BrewDog. And even though the brewery adamantly explained that the press release that was sent to nearly 11,000 journalists and news outlets in the UK, was issued without its permission, the incident still created an international maelstrom.

Natty Greene’s Closes Its Brewery in North Carolina

Natty Greene’s Brewing opened in 2007 in order to package and ship Natty Greene’s beer throughout the Southeast. Located in Greensboro, NC, the brewery refurbished its downtown taproom/restaurant operation in 2019 and opened a second venue, Natty Greene’s Brewhouse, in the city.

But on October 8 the brewery took to social media to announce that thanks to the coronavirus pandemic it would be closing its brewing operations at both locations indefinitely.

“We are closing our Brewhouse location on Gate City Blvd indefinitely due to the pandemic. Downtown will continue to operate for regular business hours, 7 days a week,” Natty Green’s explained in its post. “We thank you for your support and understanding, and ask that you continue to support us Downtown.”

And on October 19, News 2 reported that Natty Greene’s Brewing Company had filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy…

“The move means no more Natty Greene’s craft beer. This is much different from chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company is not restructuring. Chapter 7 means it’s unable to repair its financial situation and plans to liquidate assets.”
