We almost never cover anything but beer at ACB, but “never say never” at American Craft Beer, that just gets us going..

A Two-Way Collaboration (Lovingston, VA / Placentia, CA ) Virginia Distillery Co. the most-awarded single malt distillery in America, has just released a single malt whiskey as part of a cross-industry collaboration that marries Virginia whiskey craftsmanship with California’s legendary The Bruery, an Orange County craft brewery renowned for their annual Black Tuesday Stout release.

And the end result of this partnership was an uber-exclusive whiskey and a one-of-a-kind equally exclusive beer.

The Bruery Black Tuesday Stout Cask Finish is a highly limited American Single Malt Whisky released by Virginia Distillery Co. as part of their acclaimed Brewer’s Coalition series. The whisky is made from 100% malted barley and aged for more than five years in premium ex-bourbon barrels. It was then transferred into freshly emptied barrels that previously held Black Tuesday, the cult-favorite, bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout from The Bruery in Placentia, California and aged a little more.

And while the Virginia Distillery Co. used the stout barrels for this single malt, The Bruery simultaneously released a companion beer called Black Tuesday Distiller’s Coalition, an18.7% ABV American Single Malt Whiskey barrel-aged imperial stout. Unlike the traditional 750ml bottles historically used by the brewery, this high-gravity release is packaged in 12.7-ounce bottles.

“Black Tuesday has always been a beer that lets the barrel speak. Our proprietary house yeast drives a remarkably low finishing gravity, creating a decadent stout that can pull tremendous depth and character from the barrels in which it’s aged. Virginia Distillery Company’s reputation for excellence in American Single Malt made them an ideal partner for this collaboration,” said Barry Holmes, CEO of The Bruery. “To be able to release their Brewer’s Coalition whiskey finished in Black Tuesday barrels alongside Black Tuesday aged in their American Single Malt barrels is something truly special.”
