Behind the Cali Sober Movement: What Happens When You Swap Your Beer for Weed

The Cali Sober movement has become a mainstream one now. It started with a slight movement in California and has spread nationwide, and it’s now appearing at bars, in group chats, and everywhere on social media. Beer has always been a part of these common discussions, providing people with a casual platform to share their perspectives, learn new trends, and discuss their experiences in shaping everyday entertainment. You’re not the only one who heard the term “Cali Sober” and wondered what that meant.
What Does “Cali Sober” Actually Mean?
California Sober describes a lifestyle where someone cuts out alcohol while still using cannabis. The term started gaining traction around 2019. It hit the mainstream in 2021 when Demi Lovato publicly described living this way after a near-fatal overdose. Eventually, Lovato backed out of the label, saying it was a slippery slope. Yet this movement continued, as for most people, Cali Sober is not about addiction recovery. It’s just a choice of lifestyle. There’s no official definition. Others, however, drink more and still embody the Cali Sober spirit. Others drink more and still live the Cali Sober lifestyle. Other than that, it’s no alcohol, cannabis only.
The common thread is intentional; you are making an educated choice in what you feed. The change, fewer drinks, more cannabis intentionally, is evident beyond American borders, though Cali Sober may well have been named for a state. The UK has been experiencing a similar decrease in alcohol consumption for more than 10 years, especially among younger adults. The 18-24 age group had not only the highest risk of not consuming any alcohol at all in the latest survey carried out by the NHS in 2023, but has consistently been the group with the highest risk since the early 2010s.
The cultural vocabulary used varies; there is a more common use of the terms ‘sober curious’ and ‘mindful drinking’, but in the same direction. Australia and New Zealand are closely monitoring. Medical cannabis is a proven product in both countries, and polls for the legalisation of recreational cannabis in Australia have stayed over 50 per cent. While the name “Cali Sober” hasn’t quite caught on, the language of “wellness” around reducing alcohol is the same.
Why Are So Many People Making the Switch?
The numbers are hard to ignore. Gallup data from July 2025 shows that U.S. alcohol consumption has hit a record low, with three in five Gen Z adults now identifying as rare or non-drinkers. Cannabis is a big part of where those drinkers are going instead. A few things are happening at once. There’s a growing awareness of alcohol’s real health costs: the inflammation, the disrupted sleep, the anxiety that follows a night out. Legal cannabis has made weed more accessible, consistent, and socially acceptable than at any point in American history. And a generation raised on wellness culture is simply more likely to ask whether something actually serves them.
For craft beer fans, this gets complicated. Beer isn’t vodka shots at 2 am. It’s all about community, creativity and culture. Whereas there are centuries of cultural infrastructure for alcohol, including bars, wine lists, and craft beer menus. Cannabis is still in the process of developing its equivalent. The beverages come from a new category called THC beverages that are designed to be a socially familiar, drinkable form of THC for dinner parties, nights out and much more, without making it awkward. The new offerings in the various drink categories have been created in an effort to capitalise on an existing occasion but not create new ones, as beer has done for a long time.
How to Actually Try Going Cali Sober
There’s no official rulebook. A few practical starting points make the transition smoother.
- Check your local laws: Cannabis is legal recreationally in a growing number of states, but rules vary on where you can consume and what products are available. Know what applies where you are before heading to a dispensary. For example, Pennsylvania cannabis laws are different from those in more progressive states like California or New York.
- Start with low doses: This is the most crucial factor, particularly if it’s your first time or if you haven’t used marijuana recently. Calis on Sober consistently emphasises the “low and behold”: Make sure it’s enough to not be high af. A good starting place is products that have between 2.5 and 5mg of THC.
- Choose the right format: In the world of cannabis drinks, a THC seltzer is the most similar to breaking open a beer. They’re socially acceptable, controlled, and portable. Drinks are the most natural to fit into normal social routines, or low-dose edibles or vape pens can be used.
- Know your setting: The social situation of cannabis and alcohol is very different. While this is a helpful attribute for some contexts, it may be problematic in others, since cannabis engages more in introversion and slows down conversations. Allow time to work out a successful strategy before going into a large-scale event.
Is Cali Sober Actually Healthier Than Drinking?
This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: it depends. Alcohol’s health risks are well documented, particularly in relation to legal drinking habits that exceed recommended limits. Liver damage and cardiovascular effects can occur at higher consumption levels. Cannabis also has its downsides. Regular heavy use has been associated with cognitive effects in some research. But as legal cannabis is still fairly new at scale, long-term data is not yet available. Some people fit the Cali Sober label naturally, and others do not, and knowing the difference can make a difference. Many addiction professionals advise extreme caution when exchanging one substance for another, and this is especially true for those who have a history of substance use disorder.
The same pathways in the brain that can make alcohol an issue for certain individuals can react in the same way to THC. The reason Demi Lovato walked away from the label is that Cali Sober wasn’t the right fit for everyone, but she wasn’t for her. If you don’t have a history of addiction and are just reevaluating your drinking situation, it’s a different calculation. It’s not necessarily more dangerous to opt for cannabis instead of a cocktail at a dinner party than it is to drink the cocktail. It is a choice, and NOT a replacement for recovery. Age matters too. The risk of using cannabis among adolescents and young people is consistently highlighted as being greater than for adults because the prefrontal cortex is still developing until the mid-twenties.
What This Means for Craft Beer Culture
Craft beer enthusiasts are taking notice. Some of the most innovative breweries in the country have already begun to release THC seltzers and hemp-infused drinks alongside their beer, ale and lager offerings. The scores are more similar than they seem. Craft beer and high-quality cannabis share certain similarities: both are small batch, both are flavoured, and both offer a purposeful experience. The Cali Sober drinker isn’t going away. It’s a space in which they are developing. That curiosity that got a person to check out a well-designed session IPA holds for interest in well-made cannabis drinks. Flavour, balance, and situational factors all influence the way discovery is perceived in both cases, such that people attend to what is appropriate in a given moment, not a singular preference.
