Trump, Beer Buzz – Trump Tariffs Already Impacting Craft Brewers!

President Trump supports tariffs…we don’t

The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s more of what’s been happening in the beer world, while you were drinking yourself through July’s last weekend.

Pacific Northwest Craft Breweries Feel The Trump Tariff Sting (Portland, OR) – Well that was quick! The craft brewing industry in the Pacific Northwest is starting to feel the pain from the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs. They only went into action on June 1st and metal and aluminum prices are already getting more expensive.

Craft Canning + Bottling, a mobile canning service that caters to small brewers in Oregon, Washington and Colorado is one of the organizations already being stung by president Trump’s imposition of a 10 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum coming into the country.

Craft Canning + Bottling, owner Owen Lingley told KUOW that can suppliers quickly raised prices to match the 10 percent tariff on (in his case) Canadian aluminum imports and that that in turn lowers his margin for profit, forcing him to raise prices as well.

Canada currently imports the majority of raw aluminum used to produce beer cans in the US and these tariffs come at a time when more craft brewers than ever are switching from glass to aluminum for obvious reasons not the least of them being that it’s cheaper in general and many argue ensures the beer’s freshness longer than glass does.

Words To Drink By (Portland, OR) – “Canada is not a national security threat…Self-inflicted wounds are just stupid. The US can’t produce enough aluminum. It cannot do it. So we source most of it from an ally.” – Owen Lingley, Craft Canning + Bottling

Industry Trade Organizations, TheBrewers Association and the Beer Institute remain unified in their opposition to the steel and aluminum tariffs

Words To Drink By II (Boulder, CO) – “We urge this Administration to reconsider these tariffs, as they place an unnecessary burden on small, Main Street business owners who are creating thousands of jobs and pouring money back into their local economies.” – Brewers Association President Bob Pease
