Beer Buzz – Mendocino Brewing Closes Tap Room, Budweiser Shocker, Very Stable Genius Beer!

The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s some more of what’s been happening in the beer world, while you were drinking your way through a chilly weekend.

Mendocino Brewing Taproom Closes (Ukiah, CA) – The Mendocino Brewing Ale House, which for more than three decades has served as a mecca for beer lovers, closed over the weekend as troubles grow at the Northern California brewery.

Mendocino Brewing has reportedly fallen on hard times under the command of its chairman and indirect majority shareholder, Vijay Mallya, who bought the company in 1997. Up to his neck in legal troubles Mallya, who currently resides in London, is  fighting extradition to India on charges of fraud and money laundering. And maybe we can add the possible demise of a pioneering American craft brewery to that list.

Mendocino Brewing which is facing mounting financial difficulties, is according to the Press Democrat, “in discussion with an investor to help rescue the company.” And the company’s stock closed in over-the-counter trading at 20 cents a share last Friday.

Words To Drink By (Greenwood, MS) – “We can’t make ourselves want what’s good for us, or what’s good for other people…We don’t get to choose the people we are.”  Donna Tartt, The Goldfinch

Budweiser Shocker! – Preliminary analysis of national 2017 beer sales from market research leader IRI indicates that for the first time in decades, Budweiser is no longer one of the top three beer brands sold in the United States.

Light Beers The Nation’s Bestsellers – For the first time ever, the three best-selling beers in America are all light beers. Bud Light, which the Denver Post reports has been the best-selling beer in America since knocking Budweiser into second place in 2001, retains the top position, but Coors Light, which passed Bud to become the country’s No. 2 beer is 2011 was joined by Miller Lite who returned to that top three slot after narrowly edging out Budweiser.

Nation’s Top 4 Beers Still Losing Sales – IRI, which tracks sales at “off-premise” locations like supermarkets and convenience stores noted that all four of America’s best-selling beers posted declining domestic sales in 2017. It’s just that Miller Lite’s 1.6 percent volume decline was “better” than Budweiser’s 5.9 percent drop in the US.

Trump Tweet Becomes Beer (Ferndale, MI) – Axle Brewing capitalized on President Trump’s recent tweet where he declared himself a “genius…and a very staple genius at that” by announcing the impending release of Very Stable Genius Pale Ale.  And we expect that it’s gonna be HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!
