Beer has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, especially in countries like the United States, the UK, and, of course, Ireland. Guinness stout plays a starring role in those celebrations.
In fact, a 2025 study found that Americans could consume a remarkable 38.7 million pints of Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day, with total spending estimated to reach a staggering $421.6 million—a huge economic win for bars, pubs, and retailers.
Here are the top five U.S. states projected to consume the most Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day:
California
“The Golden State” remains the undisputed leader in Guinness consumption, with 13.3 million pints expected to be poured, contributing $151.8 million to the economy. Major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego—home to large Irish communities and widespread celebrations—are key drivers. California’s vibrant pub scene ensures it holds the top spot year after year.
Texas
“The Lone Star State” comes in second, with 6.87 million pints projected to be consumed, accounting for nearly $72 million in spending. Texas boasts a robust beer culture, led by cities such as Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Its large population keeps it a perennial powerhouse for Guinness sales.
New York
“The Empire State” secures a strong third place. Do we even have to explain? New York City’s iconic parades and pubs set the tone, but Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse also contribute significantly to the state’s impressive totals.
Florida
“The Sunshine State” ranks fourth, with 3.15 million pints consumed and $35.08 million in spending. Cities like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa see major upticks in Guinness sales, fueled by a mix of locals and tourists embracing the holiday.
Illinois
“The Prairie State” rounds out the top five with 1.26 million pints consumed and $12.02 million in spending. Chicago stands out in particular, thanks to its famous green river dyeing tradition and lively celebrations that drive significant Guinness pours across the city and beyond.
In fact, the Dublin-headquartered brewing giant opened its own taproom in the city in 2023. The Guinness Open Gate Brewery Chicago features a beer-friendly restaurant and the world’s first-ever Guinness Bakery—all located right in the heart of Chicago’s West Loop
