As the craft beer industry continues to face slowing sales, rising costs, and shifting consumer habits, two well-known Michigan breweries are proving that collaboration can still be one of the industry’s greatest strengths.

Saugatuck Brewing Company and Grand Rapids’ Brewery Vivant have entered into a partnership that allows both breweries to operate more efficiently while maintaining the identities that made them successful in the first place.

Founded in 2010 by Jason and Kris Spaulding, Brewery Vivant has become one of Michigan’s most distinctive craft beer destinations. Located inside a renovated historic funeral home in Grand Rapids’ East Hills neighborhood, the brewery is known for its European-inspired beers, craft spirits, cocktails, and scratch-made food menu. Over the years, it has built a loyal following thanks to its uber-unique atmosphere and its long-standing commitment to Belgian brewing traditions.

Saugatuck Brewing has carved out its own impressive place in Michigan’s beer scene. Based in Douglas near the shores of Lake Michigan, the brewery has grown far beyond its hometown roots. Its beers are distributed across 13 states and in several international markets, giving the company one of the larger footprints among Michigan craft brewers.

The relationship between the two breweries began taking shape in the fall of 2025 when Brewery Vivant started using brewing space at Saugatuck’s Douglas production facility to help meet wholesale demand. The arrangement operates as an alternating proprietorship, a model that allows both breweries to share production space while retaining complete control over their own brands, recipes, and operations.

For Brewery Vivant, the move provides access to additional brewing capacity without the expense of expanding its own facilities. For Saugatuck, the partnership helps maximize the use of its existing infrastructure and production capabilities. The result is a practical solution that creates efficiencies for both businesses at a time when many breweries are looking for ways to reduce costs.

Scott Graham, executive director of the Michigan Brewers Guild, praised the arrangement as an example of the cooperative spirit that has long defined the craft brewing industry.

He noted that partnerships like this allow breweries to operate more efficiently while benefiting from each other’s strengths. He also pointed to the collaboration as a strong example of how breweries can work together to build more sustainable businesses.

Saugatuck Brewing CEO Keith Henry sees the partnership as an important step not only for the two companies involved, but also for the broader West Michigan beer community.

The collaboration comes at a time when many independent breweries are dealing with economic pressures, changing consumer preferences, and ongoing operational challenges. Rather than viewing each other as competitors, Saugatuck and Brewery Vivant are betting that cooperation offers a better path forward.

That mindset is something Brewery Vivant founder Jason Spaulding believes has always set the brewing industry apart. He says brewers have historically been willing to share ideas, knowledge, and resources in ways that are uncommon in many other industries.

According to Spaulding, partnerships like this can help secure the future of independent brewing while continuing to support an industry that has become an important contributor to Michigan’s economy.
