Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas out there that are insanely misguided. So welcome to another BAD IDEAS IN BREWING…and we’re blaming a London based pub fueled on holiday spirits for this one.
We will never be comfortable with donut beers. Nor did we advocate for Strawberry Cream Puff Beer. We found the very idea of an IHOP Pancake Stout reprehensible and weren’t happy to learn about Oreo beer shakes last summer either.
And it doesn’t matter that this beer was inspired by the holiday season (in fact that just makes this bad idea worse), no one needs a mince pie to begin with… let alone a mince pie infused into what was once a perfectly decent IPA…
What The Hell is A Mince Pie?
According to the Evening Standard mince pie beer is coming to London and at this point it doesn’t appear that anyone can stop this horrible holiday idea…But to truly understand its atrocious implications one need to know what mince pie is to begin with.
Mince pie is a sweet pie of British origin, filled with a mixture of dried fruits and spices called “mincemeat” that is traditionally served in England during the Christmas season…It’s one those unavoidable holiday confections, like fruit cake in the US, that the British seem to think is a good idea, when it isn’t.
And you know what else isn’t a good Idea? Mixing mince pie into a beer for the holidays. And if that wasn’t enough the Long Arm Pub which is based in London’s hipster Shoreditch enclave (think Brooklyn with a British accent) is also adding gingerbread into the mix!
Beer – Never add mince pie
What they are calling a “Mince Pie-PA” (and were calling a BAD IDEA IN BEWING) will be on the tap at Long Arm Pub which doubles as a Tank Fresh brewery, meaning you’ll get this troubling creation on draught straight from the tank…So the good news is at least it will be fresh. But whether the mince pie they added to the brew is fresh is another matter altogether.
And for those of you planning to fly to the United Kingdom to sample this thing, you need to know that it won’t be available London’s Long Arm Pub until December 10, and then only as long as the batch lasts.
Bottom Line
If it turns out that some of you end up enjoying this mince pie IPA, please keep it to yourself.
Your endorsement will only encourage brewers to explore other BAD IDEAS IN BREWING holiday directions like hazy fruit cake IPA’s or candy cane sours…
