Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas that should never have happened. And this is definitely one of them.

Here’s the Deal

We’ll never be fans of Corn Dog and Funnel Cake Beer or disturbing concepts like a beer brewed with goose poop. And while less egregious than a cricket beer, a beer infused with 200 pounds of Hardee’s specially branded ‘Made From Scratch Biscuits’ isn’t a great place to start even if it is “National Biscuit Month.”

In honor of National Biscuit Month, Hardee’s (home to the Monster Thickburger) has teamed up with Southern Grist Brewing and infused its famous biscuits into a full-bodied, cream ale that incorporates hints of strawberry jam and buttermilk.

So yeah, a buttermilk biscuit beer…

, Bad Ideas In Brewing – Buttermilk Biscuit Beer“When we came up with the idea for a Hardee’s Biscuit Beer, only one brewery came to mind to bring the idea to life–Southern Grist,” Owen Klein, CKE Restaurants VP of Global Culinary Innovation said. “All it took was a few hundred pounds of biscuits.”

It also took several months of planning and tests to find what the brewery and the hamburger chain call “the perfect mix of biscuits, strawberry puree, grain, hops, yeast and water.” And rather than salvage their dignity to bail on the truly questionable project, they decided to go through with it, no matter the toll its release takes on society.

“Southern Grist has created more than 900 different flavor profiles since our inception in 2016, but never a beer infused with biscuits,” said Jared Welch, Southern Grist Brewing Co. co-founder and production manager, “so we were definitely intrigued when Hardee’s approached us.”

Bottom Line

For ages beer has been referred to as “liquid bread” but that was NEVER meant to be taken literally. Yes we like buttermilk biscuits with jam as much as the next guy, just not in our beer please.

And even though we should all be thankful that Hardees didn’t pitch Southern Grist on a Monster Thickburger Beer, we still judge them. Because in the world of BAD IDEAS IN BREWING, Buttermilk Biscuit Beer with strawberry jam flavors is so wrong for too many reasons.
