In this age of COVID-19 enjoying a beer outdoors seems more valuable than ever before. And we’ve five great American beer gardens worth travelling for…

Trillium Beer Garden – Boston, MA

It’s been more than three years since Boston’s Greenway Conservancy first tapped Trillium Brewing to operate its open-air beer garden in Boston’s Rose Kennedy Greenway Park and what started as a conceptual “maybe” has become a summertime beer institution.

Adjoining Boston’s waterfront, with a view of its harbor glimpsed through the historic Rowes Wharf Arch, Trillium Brewing’s open-air setting is a striking centerpiece to the 1.5-mile greenway and offers a welcome respite from the urban grind at the heart of the city’s busy commercial center.

Trillium Garden on The Greenway was Boston’s first fully open-air beer garden and an exciting beer destination for as the brewery describes it “celebrating a variety of life’s moments.”

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden – Astoria, NY

Founded by the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society in 1919, the Bohemian Hall is still owned and managed by the Czech and Slovak community group. And in addition to a bar complex that can seat up to 800 beer lovers, it is also home to NYC’s largest and oldest beer garden.

At one time, there were over 800 beer gardens in New York City – three in Astoria alone. And now the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden is the lone survivor. Described as “One of New York City’s quintessential summer hangouts” by Food & Wine, this beer outdoor outpost is a time machine and “social distancing” mecca for beer lovers.

Great Lakes Brewpub and Beer Garden – Cleveland, OH

In its more than 30 years business, the Great Lake Brewing Co. facility on Market Avenue has grown, and expanded several times over. But in 2020, the heritage craft brewer made its biggest step forward, with a contemporary redesign of its taproom and streetside beer garden.

Great Lakes did a striking job of honoring the brewery’s urban neighborhood with lush sidewalk greenery, great nightime lighting and beer garden vibe.

August Schell Brewing – New Ulm, MN

Founded in 1860 by August Schell a German immigrant who also co-founded the Minnesota city the brewery is in, Schell’s Beer is the second oldest family-owned brewery in America after Pennsylvania’s DG Yuengling & Son.

The brewery, which is renowned for its Pilsners, along with its expansive biergarten (complete with deer and roaming peacocks) is now owned by his descendants.

Garden stream at Stone Brewing Escondido

Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens – Escondido, CO

Located on the grounds of Stone’s SoCal compound, Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens opened on November, 1,  2006. Stone’s cavernous 8,500-square-foot space and 1-acre garden was the brewery’s first venture into the culinary world, offering serious beer and smart cuisine in a deeply shaded garden setting compete with rock outcroppings and a running stream.

Stone co-founder Greg Koch said that having been “cooped up in a concrete jungle for so long in our old space, I wanted to have my own beer garden, my own little Shangri-La…to be surrounded by plant life, water features, and natural beauty.”

Stone Brewing’s World Bistro and Gardens is all that and more, a world-class beer destination that now draws beer pilgrims from around the world.

(Note: All beer gardens are subject to current state COVID-19 regulations so check brewery website for status updates)
