San Diego’s One Million Barrel Craft Beer Impact (San Diego, CA) – Before Prohibition, there were only seven breweries in San Diego. And after repeal, only three. But now San Diego County is home to more than 160 craft breweries and that’s most of any region in the United States.

Known as the Craft Beer Capital of the US, San Diego’s current brewing industry now accounts for almost 30% of all craft breweries in California according to KUSI News – 128 operating breweries as of June 2016.

San Diego is home to iconic breweries both big and small. Names like Stone Brewing, AleSmith, Modern Times Beer and Ballast Point (all consistently rated among the top breweries in the world), are now part of the region’s considerable beer tourism draw.

One-third of all the breweries in the county are located along the 60-mile stretch of Route 78 in the North County, a stretch of road that is now also known as  “Hops Highway,” and understandably so.
