The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 23, 2014

Has it been a long week? Time to grab a beer and plan your weekend, ’cause it’s Friday; you ain’t got no job… and you ain’t got shit to do (actually, ACB hopes you have ample employment and you’re trying to keep yourself busy). We have some suggestions to help you out – from the best craft beer festivals to the latest movies that all the kids are seeing to the best programs on your picture boxes. We’ve got you covered to make sure that you have the choice water cooler talk come Monday with the peeps from accounting. Plus we have beer suggestions to help facilitate the fun!

Here’s our weekend picks!

Beer Summit Winter Jubilee (Boston, MA) – If you can’t drink enough winter beers during this frigid season, then head to the Winter Jubilee at the Park Plaza Castle in Boston. This , The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 23, 2014two-day event has three sessions spanning from Friday to Saturday night featuring over 60 breweries and 200+ beers to sample. This winter beer wonderland has been happening since 2002 and features the best malty brews from the region and local area.

Strange Brewfest 11 (Port Townsend, WA) – From the mouth of Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap, “Eleven. Exactly. One louder.” It may have seemed that the Strange Brewfest peaked last year with their weirdly crafted brews, their funk-induced live music, belly dancing, and chainsaw carving until Marty DiBergi gave the order to “put it up to eleven.” This year’s two-day craft weirdfest will feature beer from over 35 breweries at the Legion Hall in downtown Port Townsend. Tickets are $35 at the door for an existential craft beer experience.

(Did you notice that we picked a beerfest from the New England area and one from the Seattle area? Hey, we’re hip to the sports!)

Silver Screenin’ – Mortdecai has one of the most beautiful casts that we’ve seen since the Calvin Klein underwear models teamed up with Victoria Secret models to remake Our Town: The Movie that was released straight to a garbage can. Johnny Depp hits the screen again as Charlie Mortdecai (this time complete with a hipster mustache) who tries to use his charm and good looks to recover a stolen painting that may have a code to a lost bank account , The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 23, 2014filled with Nazi gold all while dodging Russians, the Mi5, and an international terrorist. In the rare case that you can bring a beer into the theater, we suggest that you drink every time anyone touches their mustache.

Sons of Liberty (History Channel, Sunday 1/25) Uncle Hank from Breaking Bad (Dean Norris) is hanging up his DEA badge and is donning a powdered wig and gout-infested cankles as he plays Ben Franklin in this History Channel Mini-Series. The three-day series covers all of your favorite events from your eighth grade US History class, from the Boston Massacre to the ride of Paul Revere to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “It’s like they took cameras back in time and captured the events as they happened, except they didn’t include the fact that Franklin could drink anyone under the table.” – The Ghost of George Washington.

, The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 23, 2014Our Weekend Beer Pick!

El Segundo Brewing Company’s Mayberry IPA – We understand that most of the country is frigid and suffering the wrath of Elsa, but in Southern California, it’s sunny and in the seventies. It’s still good IPA weather in LA so we’re recommending the Mayberry IPA if you live in or are visiting the region. This West Coast IPA, created by owner Rob Croxall, has a two-row base malt and features Mosaic Hops with Chinook Hops for bittering. This dank and floral IPA is double dry-hopped to help cram those flavors right in your gustatory and olfactory systems. Rob named this gem from the small-town, simplistic feel that El Segundo has, which is often compared to Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show. If you’re on a layover at LAX and are brave enough to wrangle security for a second time, then take the five-minute cab ride to El Segundo Brewing Company to try one of the best beers that was produced in the region in 2014 (and try to buy a bomber if they’re not sold out).
