9 Things We Do (And Don’t Do) At American Craft Beer

One of the good things about the hate mail that we sometimes get – is that it lets us know that you’re out there and invested in what we do daily. Otherwise you wouldn’t bother – you’d just blow us off and go someplace else. We’re passionate about what we do here at ACB and we don’t mind a little passion being thrown back our way.

We approach craft beer differently in a whole lot of ways here at American Craft Beer and here some things that we “do” and “don’t do.”

, 9 Things We Do (And Don’t Do) At American Craft BeerWe’re Cheerleaders For The Industry

We’re big-time capitalists and passionate about the craft beer business. We want everyone to be successful and happy – to grow rich and brew wonderful beer.

We Don’t Just Write About Craft Beer

Craft beer talk 24/7 can be boring – So we also take on entertainment news and lifestyle here at ACB. Craft beer doesn’t exist in a vacuum for us. It’s very much a part of today’s pop-cultural landscape – which also includes things like music, travel, nightlife and film – and anything else that people like to talk about when they’re out on the town, drinking with friends.

, 9 Things We Do (And Don’t Do) At American Craft BeerWe’re Craft Beer Fans- Not Judges

We’re the furthest thing in the world from beer cicerones here at ACB – but we are serious fans…Sure we’ve got favorites that we write about – but that’s all that they are. THE BEST IS a personal call as far as we’re concerned – not an absolute.

We Don’t Totally Hate Corporate Beer

We’re nicer to Big Beer than other craft beer voices. We’ve worked with at people at Anheuser- Busch and if they brew something we like – we may write about it. We also believe strongly in fair and ethical business practices and we’ll fight the unfair use of money and power to influence governmental policy, marketing and distribution practices at every turn -especially when the goal is to squash small business!

We Like To Cover The  Biz With A Sense Of Humor

Otherwise, why bother. The craft beer scene is almost too much fun and we hope to reflect that.

We’ve Stopped Using The ABV Abbreviation All The Time

We’ve decided that by now our readers understand that ABV stands for “alcohol by volume” and we’re feeling less obligated to always use it. The Brits seldom include ABV when they describe their craft beers and we think it just reads better…So get ready to learn more about this year’s 4.7% Pilsner rather than the 4.7% ABV Pilsner we written about in the past.

We Also Don’t Care That Much About IBU Ratings

As some of you may have noticed we avoid the “international bitterness unit” thing like the plague here at ACB – and see this ranking as primarily a marketing play aimed at hopheads who should know. Taste is inherently arbitrary – a beer’s taste is tempered by one’s genetic pre-disposition. What’s too bitter for some may seem nothing at all to others. Plus even though one can argue that measuring the concentration of bitter hop acids in the beer in parts-per-million is pure science it still doesn’t matter as the bitterness one experiences is always countered the amount of malt (a source of sweetness) in the beer

, 9 Things We Do (And Don’t Do) At American Craft BeerWe Can Be Politically Incorrect

We don’t love the phrase “politically correct”. We find its use vaguely “Orwellian” and a convenient way to obscure the truth. And telling the truth (as we see it) is important to us here at ACB – even when it’s not popular and generates that hate mail we mentioned earlier.

We Don’t Cover Beer Pong

We don’t cover Ciders either.
