Industry Panel Wants Hollywood Stars Banned From Beer Ads In Japan

“No beer for you!” – Mel Gibson 2011 mug shot

Japan has been running a series of television ads over the years that have been a huge economic boon for some big name Hollywood stars (Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford –we’re looking at you!).

But it appears that this economic gravy train is now under assault.

These video ads, flacking Japanese “Big Beer” companies like Kirin are hardly works of art.  They basically show much younger versions of the now grizzled stars guzzling beer with enhanced gurgling sound effects, and declaring it “Oishi!”, which is Japanese for delicious.

But an industry body has reportedly called for an end to this form of advertising, claiming that these ads glamorize beer and somehow encourage alcohol abuse – potentially putting an end to the last “Oscar-worthy” performances by either Harrison Ford or Mel Gibson.

The panel’s guidelines also recommend that any stars appearing in these Japanese beer spots be at least 25 years old – which has got to afford some solace for these aging film icons, Harrison Ford (now 74) and Mel Gibson who’s gotta be in his sixties.
