Another Canadian drinks distributor is getting into the cannabis biz and why shouldn’t they? Somebody’s got to move that recreational weed once it becomes legal in Canada this summer.

Here’s the deal…

pot, A Great North Drinks Distributor Goes To Pot!Great North Distributors (a Canadian subsidiary of Miami, Florida based Southern Glazer’s) has according to the Drinks Business confirmed a deal with marijuana producer Aphria to distribute its products across Canada when the country officially legalizes recreational pot this year.

Great North will reportedly be recruiting a cannabis-focused sales team (we can’t wait to the see the videos of that recruitment process) to represent Aphria’s product portfolio.

Aphria, (which means ‘agreeable’ in Celtic) and is currently traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange as a medical cannabis company, has a current market capitalization of $3 billion.

And this deal marks the first time a cannabis company is reportedly partnering with an alcohol distributor to help with their distribution of legal marijuana.

Last October, Constellation Brands, home to Corona, Modelo, Ballast Point and Florida’s Innovative Funky Buddha Brewery sent shockwaves across the drinks industry when they announced that they had agreed to buy a near 10 percent stake in Canopy Growth Corporation, the world’s largest publicly traded cannabis company.

And in April, Hydropothecary, an award-winning medical cannabis producer located on a 143-acre farm in Gatineau, Quebec, announced that they had entered into a 5-year agreement with the Société des alcools du Québec (Quebec Alcohol Corporation/SAQ) that allows them to exclusive rights of distribution for the company’s full line of pot products which includes cannabis buds, powders and oils.

Canada’s recreational cannabis industry is predicted to be worth up to $6.2bn (£3.6bn) after this year’s expected legalization…
