Locals and police teamed up in the town of Ostritz in Germany over the weekend to ensure a planned neo-Nazi festival was a “Sober Curious” affair with residents buying up the town’s beer supplies.

Here’s what we know…

This year’s Schild und Schwert Festival [Shield and Sword Festival] which took place over the weekend in Germany was dry this year thanks to a court decision, police and locals opposed to neo-Nazis.

A Dresden court imposed a ban on the sale and possession of alcohol at the music festival citing its “aggressive character.” And that action allowed police in the state of Saxony to confiscate more than 1,000 gallons of beer last Friday and Saturday.

But Ostritz locals opposed to the event’s neo-Nazi attendees also jumped into action…

Expecting “that some neo-Nazis would attempt to purchase more alcohol once they were at Ostritz residents took it upon themselves to stock up on hundreds of crates of beer from a local store,” according to Newsweek.

Ostritz activist, Georg Salditt, told Bild that together with colleagues, he’d managed to buy over 200 crates of beer…“The plan was devised a week before. We wanted to dry the Nazis out. We thought, if an alcohol ban is coming, we’ll empty the shelves at the Penny [supermarket],” he said.

The local police force also tweeted pictures of officers seizing boxes of beer according to the Drinks Business.

According to media reports, between 500 and 600 people attended the festival, but crowds of around 2,000 people protested against the event.
