Devils Backbone Banned From Awards They Were Hosting
Actions have consequences and the fact that Devils Backbone, Virginia’s largest and most decorated brewery, chose to be acquired by Anheuser-Busch in April, wasn’t wasted on the Virginia Brewers Guild who sponsor the Virginia Craft Beer Cup awards annually. In spite of the fact that Devils Backbone has been holding those awards on their own brewery grounds since their inception in 2012 the guild decided that the brewery no longer independent and therefore ineligible to participate in this year’s contest. It appears that great German-style beer gardens (or Biergartens as purists insist) are no longer just province of the “motherland.” In fact the whole biergarten thing is spreading like wildfire and now even the United States is home to some great ones. Last week we showcased some great beer gardens in the nation’s capital.
