The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here are just some of what’s been happening in the beer world, while you were drinking your way through the weekend.

Brewery Expansion Plans On ‘Permanent Hold’ (Frederick, MD) – Maryland’s largest craft beer producer, Flying Dog Brewing’ plans to build a $2.55 million brewery, on 32 acres of farmland that they purchased in 2016, has been put on ‘permanent hold’ according to the Baltimore Sun.

Flying Dog’s Now Defunct Brewery Plans (which we’ve got to admit to being bummed that they’ve been halted) would have been 5x’s the size of their existing facility, increased their production capability by 8 million cases annually, and featured a more expansive taproom as well as an outdoor concert facility.

Flying Dog’s Chief Executive Jim Caruso explained the brewery’s decision to The Sun as the result of unspecified “regulatory and legislative issues that relate to all breweries in Maryland.” And, on an entirely different note, he added that the brewery was “in the early stages of getting back into the distillery business.” Hmmmmmmmm!

Unlike many university programs (which emphasize brewing over the biz) UNC’s Craft Beer Business Essentials was designed to provide students, who are serious about starting a commercial craft brewery, with the kind of foundational business knowledge that many ‘Brew U’s’ tend to overlook.

Working with industry professionals and successful brewery owners, UNC’s craft beer business program offers a graduate certificate and real world classes like Legal Bootcamp for Craft Beer, Business Identity Development & Marketing Strategies and Brewery Management Fundamentals.
