The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s some more of what’s been happening in the beer world, while you were drinking your way through the weekend.

BrewDog Invests In Artisan Ciders (Ellon, Scotland) – Although we don’t normally cover the cider scene here at American Craft Beer, we were struck on our last trip to London by their prominence in the UK and the historical symmetry they seem to share with the cask ale heads over there. And now it appears that BrewDog (who recently introduced LoneWolf, their spirits division) is getting into the serious cider game.

BrewDog announced last week that they invested in Hawkes cider, a London-based artisan cidery founded by Stephen Wright. And that the Scottish punk brewers “will be supporting their imminent growth both at home in the UK and internationally.”

Hawkes range of ciders will remain (and expand) under the new arrangement and the staff will stay in place. Wright will remain at the helm, along with BrewDog’s senior team on hand to support his considerable ambitions.

Words To Drink By (Minneapolis, MN) – “We are in an industry that has for far too long allowed ‘big’ cider and mass market products to hold back innovation and growth… I can’t wait to see what the future holds.” Simon Wright, Hawkes cider

Maui Brewing’s Garrett Marrero

Maui’s Garrett Marrero Nominated As LA’s “Entrepreneur Of The Year” (Kihei, Hawaii) –  Maui Brewing founder, Garrett Marrero, has been nominated and is a semi-finalist in Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur Of The Year 2018 Greater Los Angeles Awards program (which we were surprised to learn also includes Las Vegas and Hawaii).

Garrett has been on quite a roll of late having recently returned from France where he joined a party of industry professionals including the BA’s Bob Pease and Executive Chef Adam Dulye, Three Weavers’ Lynne Weaver, Port City’s Karen Butcher and Bill Butcher and Sierra Nevada’s Steve Grossman for a special Brewers Association hosted by the United States French Ambassador Jamie McCourt.
