New Mexico State now has its own officially licensed beer…and they’re not alone.

What once might have been considered a highly unusual platform for institutional branding is becoming more common and it looks like a growing number of academic institutions are looking to broaden their profiles (and generate funds) with the help of university branded beer.

New Mexico State recently teamed up with Las Cruces’ Bosque Brewing to release Pistol Pete’s 1888 Ale, a lager that was named after the school’s ‘gun’s blazing’ mascot and the date that the university was founded.

The Coloradoan  is reporting that “In Louisiana, university leaders embarked on similar branding deals to help fill budget gaps as lawmakers have stripped hundreds of millions of dollars in state financing from their campuses.”

Louisiana State University now has an officially licensed beer that was crafted for them by Baton Rouge-based Tin Roof Brewing. Designed with college football and tailgate parties in mind, LSU’s Bayou Bengal is a 4.5% ABV Lager brewed for cooling afternoons and seasoned sports rivalries.

University of Louisiana-Lafayette harnessed the considerable talents Bayou Teche Brewing for their unique branded craft beer that made its debut at their first home game in 2015. beer, Beer Branding – Universities Get CraftierFt Collins, Colorado’s New Belgium Brewing, the nation’s fourth largest craft brewer, partnered with Colorado State on their university branded beer, Old Aggie Superior Lager.

The beer itself was designed by an alumnus of the university who has brewed at New Belgium for more than 15 years, and a portion of its sales donated to CSU’s fermentation science and technology program, the athletic department and alcohol awareness efforts for students.

Clearly university branded beer (lagers in particular) are becoming a “thing.” But we’ll have to wait to agree that they’ve finally ‘arrived’ when one of these institutions of higher learning, decide to release something ‘craftier,” like their own branded IPA.
