Hey it’s the Weekend…and you’re ready for some fun. And given that we’re in the peak of Oktoberfest season we’re paying special attention to this timeless tradition. Of course we’ll still be covering the hottest movies, music and cutting edge TV – but we’ll just be doing it in lederhosen.
Oktoberfest Everywhere (Planet Earth) – It’s time to pill out your lederhosen grab you favorite polka mixtape and hit the road for the nearest Oktoberfest celebration because it’s peak season for this kind of thing and they’re taking place everywhere. For authenticity and cold weather buzz we suggest that you head north to Alberta and take in the Edmonton Oktoberfest this weekend. But there’s also the 5th annual Muskegon Oktoberfest out in Michigan, The 37th annual Fredericksburg Oktoberfest down in Texas, and the Huddersfield Oktoberfest Beer & Cider Festival over in the UK.
Beerfest The Movie – There’s only one film that we’re recommending this weekend, but since it was first released back in 2006, you’ll probably have to go to Netflix and stream it. Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (who was shamed out of the business after his film opened to atrocious reviews) BeerFest has grown over the years to become a true cult classic and Oktoberfest staple. Starring the acclaimed Cloris Leachman as Great Gam Gam Wolfhouse and Donald Sutherland, who was sadly overlooked for an Academy Award in his role as her husband, Beerfest is required viewing this weekend.
Music/ Music / Music –Only one genre of music is acceptable this weekend and that of course is polka. And If you don’t want to fuck around, we suggest you head out to your local music store (they’re still around…right?) and scoop up anything from the master, Frankie Yankovic, who’s known far and wide, as the “Polka King.” We’re particularly fond of his breakout release German Drinking Songs and even though Six Fat Dutchmen remains a classic, you’re not wrong to go with his definitive Greatest Polka Hits collection.
The Biggest Oktoberfest Celebration Outside of Germany (Blumenau, Brazil) – We were blown away to learn that the biggest Oktoberfest festival outside of Germany will soon be taking place in South America! Oktoberfest Blumenau 2016 is a celebration of German traditions all over the world and this year’s 19 day celebration (October 5th -19th) launches later this week (so you’ve time to call in sick and book you’re airfare).
OUR OKTOBERFEST WEEKEND BEER PICK
Our favorite craft Octoberfest seasonal in the world, comes from Firestone Walker and as far as we’re concerned it’s pretty much genius! Named as a homage to their hometown, Paso Robles), Firestone Walker’s OAKtoberfest 5% hop-forward Märzen that nails it and we intend to drink it non-stop all weekend.
