2017’s Best Movies And Craft Beer Pairings

movies, 2017’s Best Movies And Craft Beer Pairings

2017 was a great year for craft beer and a decent year for movies and as usual we overindulged in both.  So here are (in no particular order) some of our favorite movies from 2017 along with a suggested beer pairing.

Blade Runner 2049

Director Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s neo-noir science fiction masterpiece, Blade Runner didn’t generate the audience that Warner Bros. might’ve hoped for, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t one of last year’s most compelling and visually spectacular films.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner (they’re charged with tracking down renegade replicants) LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos (as if it wasn’t already).

K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Suggested Beer Pairing: Bladerunner Belgian Pale Ale – Blizzard Brewing (Australia VIC)

Wonder Womenmovies, 2017’s Best Movies And Craft Beer Pairings

In spite of its rave reviews, we were late catching up with Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman…We’d been suffering from superhero burnout, and couldn’t imagine how a period-piece built around an Amazonian warrior had any chance of being truly entertaining…and we couldn’t have been more wrong.

It’s Gal Gadot’s humorous and confident portrayal as Wonder Woman that makes this film fly…but they writing also forgoes the dirge-like tones that have plagued other DC Comic disasters like Batman v Superman in favor of just having a good time. Suggested Beer Pairing: Formorian Priestess Smoked Lager – 3 Floyds Brewing (Munster IN)

Logan

What we assumed would be a diverting airplane movie at best, ended up being the only X-Men film we EVER cared about, and definitely the best western we’ve seen in a decade.

It’s 2029. Mutants are gone–or very nearly so. An isolated, despondent Logan (Wolverine) is drinking his days away a remote stretch of the Mexican border, picking up petty cash as a driver for hire. But Logan’s attempts to disappear from the world ends when he reluctantly comes to the aid of an extraordinary young girl that many hope to destroy.

Logan also has one of the best trailers of the year that features a haunting song by the great Johnny Cash. Suggested Beer Pairing:Faustian Baltic Porter – Wolverine Brewing (Ann Arbor, MI)

movies, 2017’s Best Movies And Craft Beer PairingsThe Big Sick

Based on the real-life courtship between the Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and his unlikely grad-school girlfriend, Emily, The Big Sick was a small wonder.

But the humorous multi-cultural interplay of their cute urban courtship takes an unexpected turn when Emily succumbs to a mystery illness, forcing Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano both terrific), while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his Muslim family and his heart. Suggested Beer Pairing: Sick Day Brown Ale – Long Trail Brewing (Bridgewater’s Corners, VT)

Wind River

Taylor Sheridan’s backcountry crime thriller fell victim to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, which forced the director to wrestle back control of his movie from the Weinstein Company to ensure its release in 2017. And with hardly any money left to promote it, one of 2017’s most gripping mysteries went largely unnoticed.

Wind River is unapologetic about the real-life issues affecting Native American reservations and features some of Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen’s best work. An air of isolation and desperation pervades the snowbound drama and its ending as bone-chilling as it is resonant. Suggested Beer Pairing: Wyoming Pale Ale – Wind River Brewing (Pinedale, WY)
